Route description

After an initial steep section, there is a beautiful walk through the woods and high meadows, surrounded only by mountains and nature. The trail takes you away from Sauris to the border with western Veneto. As it opens out onto mountain plateaus so the views become more panoramic. The Alpine vegetation here is lush. Near Sella Festons, on the southern slopes of the plateau overlooking Lake Sauris, 1800 meters above sea level, you will pass an area of sinkholes, and now an area of national interest. These are the result of dissolution and erosion of the surface rock. As the rock disappears, the result is a depression, and a sinking of the land. And finally what you see are the perfectly circular sinkholes, the largest of which can reach up to about seventy metres wide and twenty deep. The trail here offers a particularly wide panoramic view to the south, dominated by the imposing rockface of Mount Bivera-Clapsavon. At the Casera Festons mountain refuge, on the other hand, you will find picturesque lakes. Going north, the majestic peaks of the Dolomites of Val Pesarina start coming into view, which is where the next stage will take us.
